The Car Plays: San Diego

Based on an innovative concept by director Paul Stein, The Car Plays offers audience members a voyeuristic view of a series of 10-minute plays that all take place in cars. As the audience enters the theatre, couples are ushered into the back seats of one of 15 automobiles. The short plays occur in the front seats. Narratives range from a story about two Comic Con fans facing their future, to a tale about two dogs waiting for their owners. At the end of each play, audience members move to the next car. The play garnered a “Critics Choice” award from the Los Angeles Times. The Car Plays ends its run at the La Jolla Playhouse on March 4.

Sandra Bernhard I Love Being Me, Don’t You?

The Los Angeles Times said that watching Sandra Bernhard’s new show “is like hanging out with a hip and funny friend who never fails to lift you up with her outrageous freedom.” Since the 1970s, Sandra Bernhard has been delighting audiences with her edgy but hilarious perspective of the world, enjoying numerous appearances around the world. Sandra Bernhard I Love Being Me, Don’t You? takes place in the Playhouse’s Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre. The space was specially designed as a cabaret theatre, with multi-tiered levels and supper-club seating. Beverages and refreshments are available. The shows runs March 14-17.

The Second City’s Laugh Out Loud Tour 

Also held in the Sheila and Hughes Potiker Theatre, The Second City’s Laugh Out Loud Tour is a celebration of the acclaimed 52-year-old comedy troupe that includes alumni like Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Bill Murray and Gilda Radner. Featuring improvisations, sketches and songs, the show introduces audiences to the next generation of comedy legends. The show not only give audiences a glimpse of up-and-coming stars, but allows them to interact in improvised comedy. The show runs March 21-24.

For the avid naturist, Black’s Back is home to America’s largest unofficial nudist beach. While public nudity has been illegal in the public portion of Black’s Beach since 1977, nudity is tolerated in certain parts of the beach that is managed by the state park. The clothing-optional portion of Black’s Beach begins at the steel buoy south of Flatrock, and continues south for approximately a mile until the beach reaches the trail leading to the Torrey Pines Gliderport.

Black’s Beach is conveniently located within walking distance of several San Diego hotels. It is a protected area which sees light to moderate traffic throughout the year. Lifeguards are staffed year round in permanent lifeguard stations with additional lifeguards stationed in seasonal lifeguard towers during the summer. Due to its location beneath the bluffs, Black’s Beach is best accessed from the adjacent beaches to the south and north, but this may be obstructed by surf or high tides.
