Pierce Kavanagh, who is a co-founder of the festival, said the event will promote and congratulate those who make surfing films out of passion for the activity. Kavanagh, who is also a surfer and surfing filmmaker, said that the festival’s goal is to bring those in the surfing community together.

Kavanagh organized the festival along with his wife Petra and friend Ed Lewis. Kavanagh said that the organizers have lots of friends who are independent surf filmmakers and that they noticed the hard times they had making the movies as an art form.

He hopes the film festival will give independent surfing filmmakers more public support, in addition to securing them promotional and distribution deals. He said the end result will be surfing filmmakers acquiring the freedom to make the films they want and making better films for people to watch.

The film festival will be held at Bird’s Surf Shed, which is located only five minutes from Mission Valley Resort, one of the best resort hotels in San Diego. Mission Valley Resort offers guests resort-level accommodations and amenities right in the midst of some of the area’s most visited attractions.

Weather in San Diego: A Slice of the Mediterranean in California

San Diego has what is known as an arid Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, slightly wet winters. It is the only area in the United States with that type of climate. The climate typically remains within a fairly narrow range of pleasant temperatures. The average temperature in San Diego is 64 degrees, with the lowest monthly average being 57 degrees in January, and the highest being 72 degrees in August. In late summer and early fall, temperatures may occasionally reach 90 degrees or higher, but that is a rare occurrence.

Rainfall in San Diego averages 10 inches per year, mostly falling between December and March. February is the only month in which it is likely to rain more than 2 inches, and it almost never rains in the summer months. This level of precipitation is the lowest of the entire West coast the tropical storms that affect many other parts of the California coast do not typically reach San Diego, and hurricanes and thunderstorms are rare. As for snow, it is almost unheard-of in San Diego. It has only been observed five times in over 150 years of record keeping.

In addition to being warm and dry, the weather in San Diego is sunny for the majority of the year. However, in early summer, a phenomenon known to locals as ‘June gloom’ sets in. During June gloom, which can actually sometimes extend from May through July, a low layer of cloud cover forms directly over the coast, making the weather cloudy and cool. This cloud layer only extends inland for a few miles, however, so it is easily escaped.

Another unusual weather pattern in San Diego is the Santa Ana winds. Beginning in September and potentially lasting through February, these winds occur about 10 days out of the year. They are bursts of hot, dry wind that can gust at speeds up to 100 miles per hour and can lower the humidity level to under 10%. They have the potential to spread and worsen wildfires.

In general, the climate of San Diego is considered to be one of the most pleasant and desirable in the country.

Attractions in San Diego – San Diego Museum of Art

In Mission Valley’s Hotel Circle, Mission Valley Resort is not far from Balboa Park. Within this famous park are museums like the San Diego Museum of Art. We at Mission Valley Resort encourage our guests to check out this fine venue, the oldest art museum in the region. The featured art is Spanish, and other famous artists from around the world are also represented.

The Collections

The museum displays works by distinguished Spanish artists like Cotan, El Greco and Murillo. The El Marques de Sofraga by Franscisco Goya is displayed in a place of honor. One of Giovanni Bellini’s as well as one of Diego Velasquez’ portraits are also prominently showcased. Then, several Italian artists have their works on exhibit in the San Diego Museum of Art.

The Building

Built for the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, Robert W. Snyder and William Templeton Johnson designed it to match other nearby architecture. Constructed in the Plateresque style as other surrounding buildings and structures, this style from Spain was common in the 1500s to 1700s. The landmark features of the building are its ornate fascade and decorated door. Ideas for the exterior came from the Cathedral Valladolid and a doorway at the University of Salamanca. Inspirations for the interior came in part from Toledo, Spain’s Santa Cruz Hospital.

The Events

Every year in April, the museum hosts “Art Alive” as its primary fund raiser. This wonderful event brings works by floral artists that use flowers and other natural materials to make a creative likeness of one of the museum’s masterpieces. Then all year, presentations and other enlightening events are scheduled. Occasions open to the public are listed on the museum calendar.

The Hours

The museum is open every week day except Monday until 5:00 p.m. After hours events are often free of admission.

Attractions in San Diego – Explore the San Diego Natural History Museum

Mission Valley Resort wants you to get the most out of your stay by visiting attractions around the San Diego area. The San Diego Natural History Museum is a fun and educational place to spend time while in our city. Originally built in 1874, the museum was founded by the San Diego Society of Natural History. In 1933, the museum was moved to Balboa Park, where it stands today. A new wing was added in 2001.

Inside, one can find a plethora of artifacts and fossils. The museum keeps a dinosaur called an Allosaur. The Allosaur was large in size, had three fingered claws, and ate other animals. This type of dinosaur lived in the Cretaceous period. The San Diego Natural History Museum doesn’t just have dinosaur bones and fossils. Other fossils include those of a mastodon, grey whale, hedgehog, and ground sloth. Another exhibit focuses solely on skulls of animals. A giraffe skull and rhinoceros skull are part of the exhibit.

The San Diego Natural History Museum has held very popular exhibits in the past. The museum hosted the Dead Sea Scrolls for a year in 2007. In 2011, there was a Titanic exhibit, including real artifacts from the ship wreck. The museum will no doubt interest the public with exciting exhibits in the future.

The museum is not just full of history; it is also a part of history. During World War II, in 1943, the Navy took over the museum to be used as a hospital for the diseased. Nurse’s stations and an elevator were installed. They are still in the museum today.

Overall, the San Diego Natural History Museum offers a great tour for adults and children alike. While in Balboa Park, visit the Museum of Man and Museum of Art, for more educational, family fun.

Attractions in San Diego – Take Time To Tour Old Town

We invite all of our customers from Mission Valley Resort to visit and enjoy the history, shopping and tasty restaurants in Old Town, San Diego. Old Town is located at the intersection of 1-8 and 1-5, just north of downtown. Old Town could be considered the birthplace of California because the first Spanish Mission was established there in 1769 by Father Junipero Serro. Old Town gives visitors a fascinating glimpse into California’s history. Many of the historic structures are in the State Historic Park, a nine square block state park that details aspects of Old Town’s history. Along the route of museum buildings are shops with Mexican themed crafts. Here is a brief guide to a few of Old Town’s highlights to help you spend an enjoyable half day of touring.
