What has been described as “San Diego’s most beloved street party” – Gaslamp San Diego Mardi Gras – is a great event to center a visit to San Diego around. It will take place on Feb. 17 in one of America’s Finest City’s most lively and historic neighborhoods, the Gaslamp Quarter, which is located just 4 miles south of the Mission Valley Resort.
The celebration starts at 5 p.m. and runs to midnight, and it features disc jockeys and other artists performing on five stages. The featured entertainer will be Snoopadelic, otherwise known as Snoop Dogg.
The highly anticipated parade, which will feature some pretty impressive floats, starts at 5th Avenue and E Street before heading south shortly after 9 p.m.
Accompanying the partiers, many of whom will be wearing colorful masks and costumes, will be a variety of entertainers such as glow performers, show girls, break dancers, fire dancers, samba dancers, Capoiera dancers, acrobatic performers, street drummers, the Pussycat Dolls and stilt walkers.
An impressive 576-square foot segment of the street will also be set aside for live graffiti artists to bring it alive while a large animatronics feature robot, Kryoman, and an incredible 50-foot puppet that would fit right in at a Chinese New Year’s celebration will also entertain partiers.
General admission tickets cost $35 through Feb. 16 or $40 if purchased the day of the event. They provide entrance into the celebration at one of two gates, which are located at 5th Avenue and Broadway and 5th Avenue and L Street. Benefits for these ticket holders include being able to enter a variety of places without needing to pay a cover charge. See SDMardiGras.com/restaurantbar-specials for more details.
Another option that you may want to consider is purchasing an Ultimate Mardi Gras VIP Experience; it costs $100 through Feb. 16 or $120 if bought on Feb. 17. Among the numerous benefits that you would enjoy include being able to access a special VIP entrance at both of the entrance gates as well as the VIP Voodoo Lounge.
